Ontario’s refusal to mandate vaccination in health care puts long-term care at risk

Today, Premier of Ontario Doug Ford announced the Province won’t mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for healthcare workers.

CanAge firmly opposes this shortsighted decision, as it will compel unvaccinated workers to leave already understaffed long-term care homes (where vaccination is required) to work in hospitals. At a time when the long-term care sector has lost an estimated 30% of its staff, this is a loss we simply cannot afford to bear.

We’ve been actively advocating for increased and enhanced staffing in long-term care since the onset of the pandemic. This move will further exacerbate an already critical issue putting vulnerable residents at risk.
